LOCAL HISTORY
The South Florida Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) was founded in 1966 as part of the Florida Chapter of APWA, which was chartered in 1960 as part of Region IV* of the national organization. Since its formation, the Florida Chapter of APWA has grown to include 11 branches divided by geographic regions. The South Florida Branch serves Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.
MISSION STATEMENT
To further the objectives of the national organization by being a public policy advocate for the infrastructure in South Florida and the primary gateway resource for public works education, knowledge exchange and services.
To unify public works organizations and practitioners throughout Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties by providing leadership, developing educational programs and offering direction and support on public works issues to members, elected officials and the public.

APWA FLAG
Through the efforts of a committee of North Miami Beach’s Public Services APWA members; the support of the board members; the tireless endeavors of Graeme Hunt, APWA’s graphic designer and David Dancy, APWA’s director of marketing, a new APWA flag was designed and unveiled at the branch meet hosted by the City of North Miami Beach on January 31 2003,
The significance was far reaching and resounded throughout APWA. Prior to this, a flag did not exist. With this initiative the South Florida Branch clearly solidified itself on not only the state but also the national level.
To ensure the flag’s permanence and symbolic meaning, a new tradition was established. The flag is now passed on from city to city as each takes its turn as host of the APWA monthly meeting. The flag is a proud representation of the branch’s resurgence and has garnered strong interest from other branches throughout the APWA.
*Other Chapters located in Region IV include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Orleans, North Lake and Puerto Rico.
